Zumba is an aerobic exercise that is taking over gyms around the world. Advertised as a dance party, it’s a fun way to work out. In fact, with all the music and dancing, you might not even notice the sweat!

People who do Zumba are having a blast while they are challenging themselves physically. It’s a creative expression that’s also a sport, and there’s definitely no reason not to have fun while you’re exercising.

Have Gary or Jessica tried Zumba? Do they want to? Learn more in today’s English lesson about dance.

Jessica:  So, I was at the gym the other day, and I happened to look in the class and saw they were doing Zumba.

Gary:  I’ve heard about this thing.

Jessica:  Oh my gosh. It looked like so much fun. They were having a blast. I have a few family members who do Zumba and dance classes, like hip hop. And it’s such a cool creative expression, but you’re also getting your aerobic exercise in.

Gary:  It feels weird to me that dancing is being called exercise when, you know, riding a bicycle is exercise, or lifting weights, or going for a run. Where you’re getting your heart rate up, and you’re improving your times, and you’re really challenging yourself. It’s an exercise. It feels like there’s more to it than dance.

Jessica:  Well, when I looked in, all of these people were dripping with sweat, but they all had smiles on their faces. They were having so much fun. And the music sounded awesome, too. So I may check it out. I’ll let you know.

Gary:  Yeah, please.

Jessica:  Yeah.

Gary:  I’m open to it.

Jessica tells Gary that she recently saw a Zumba class at the gym. She says that everyone doing the class looked like they were having fun. They were actually smiling while they were working out!

Jessica likes the idea of dancing for exercise, but Gary isn’t sure. To him, dance isn’t the same as sports, even though it increases your heart rate, just like riding a bike or running. Jessica’s ready to try Zumba, so she says she’ll check it out and tell Gary about her experience afterwards.

Have you ever tried Zumba? Is dancing a sport?
