Fitness centers, or gyms, have become a popular place for people to get in shape. Even hotels and apartments often have a small room where motivated people can exercise. Treadmills are one of the most common machines athletes use. They have a moving track to run on, so no matter what the weather or security situation is outside, people can complete their training inside.

Some treadmills have fancy built in features, like fans or TVs. Some let you watch your heart rate. Almost all treadmills tell you how fast you’re going and how far you’ve run. It may not be as exciting as running outside, but a treadmill is a great tool for athletes.

Learn what Gary and Jessica like about treadmills in today’s English lesson about exercise.

Gary:  Jess, did you know that I play soccer?

Jessica:  No, I didn’t.

Gary:  I actually use a treadmill to get in shape to play soccer.

Jessica:  Do you really?

Gary:  I do.

Jessica:  I just started running on a treadmill. I like to walk and run on the treadmill, but I was impressed that they have fans built in to the treadmill that I run on.

Gary:  Oh, wow.

Jessica:  And they have a heart rate monitor.

Gary:  Yes.

Jessica:  That’s very cool.

Gary:  I think my favorite thing about the treadmill that I use is the ability to choose how fast you’re going.

Jessica:  Yeah.

Gary:  So, it really helps to keep your pace. And then, of course, it tells you how far you’ve gone…

Jessica:  Exactly.

Gary:  …which is really helpful. And I know some people really like to use it, but there’s the TV right there.

Jessica:  Oh, exactly.

Gary:  So, you can just watch the news or distract yourself because running on a treadmill can be a bit boring.

Jessica:  It’s true. I like to listen to music.

Gary:  Yeah.

Jessica:  And then, that kind of gets me motivated to keep running or maybe increase my pace. But you can monitor your pulse and your heart rate, which is also really exciting.

Gary:  The only thing that I’ve found that’s a little risky with the treadmill is if you just lose focus for a second, you might fall off because it’s going to throw you backwards.

Jessica:  Oh my gosh. I’ve never done that. Have you ever done that?

Gary:  I’ve lost footing once, but that’s it.

Jessica:  Oh my gosh.

Gary and Jessica discover that they both use a treadmill to stay in shape. Gary uses a treadmill to train for soccer. Jessica likes to walk and run on her treadmill.

Some of the other built in features that Jessica likes include a fan and a heart rate monitor. Gary enjoys choosing his speed and knowing how far he’s run. Jessica and Gary also use music and TV to keep their minds off of running. However, Gary jokes that it’s important not to lose focus. One time, he almost fell off the treadmill!

Have you ever used a treadmill? Would you rather run indoors or outdoors, or not at all?

“I would walk five hundred miles and I would walk five hundred more”... :) Is it the effect of nature?

I was excited about running on the treadmill and I brought it home. I was motivated for few days but then I procrastinated for ages. Those who are already developed the habit of running will find it helpful but those like me who got the bubble fever for treadmill will eventually find it hard to cope with it. I find walking more interesting but it too need to get into the system for at least 4 months to make it permanent daily routine.

I do like walking more than treadmill, because we going through the nature, wheris treadmill is like prison.

The built in treadmill didn’t attract me , but i enjoy while walking outdoor no matter what  he weather  is ,actually when we walk daily we get in shape, and we keep our pace.

Whatever we us either walking or treadmill, it is importand to continue on exercises.

Yes, I already used a treadmill. When I used to go to the gym, I liked to use treadmill to warm up. I know some people who have in their homes a treadmill. After a time they give up of using it. They said that it’s boring run on or walking at home alone….

Hi dears !
Someone who uses the treadmill properly can get exactly the same level of exercise as road running, All you have to is jump jump jump.:))))
I agree 100% that nothing beats running on the road, but it isn’t always practical and Road running without good shoes and stretching will destroy your ankles.

@Seiyf_khawas…I agree. There are a lot of people who have no other options to work out, especially if they don’t live in a safe neighborhood. What’s important is that you should keep a positive attitude about the whole “get in shape” craze..where and how doesn’t really matter. Let every man seek heaven in his own fashion ;)

Treadmill is just a mechanical device. Everything it calculates. But if we run outdoor, we can get fresh air, birds sounds, sunlight etc. Though treadmill helps me to reduce weight i prefer to run outdoor.

whenever you are running on the treadmill, you can run more because you dont see any distance but running outside is more enjoyable. for instance in the park, in the morning. try it ;-)

maybe it can be very useful indoor activity for many people ,using treadmills..

maybe these people can calculate how many meters they walked and run ..how many weight they lifted up..how many excercises they did..

maybe it can be healtier in the  protective saloons..there can be  all first-aid medicines and other facilities there..

but I feel ,somethings are absent there ..these mechanical machines ,these steel treadmills dont make me happy ..ı dont have any desire for them ..

maybe Nature offers us wonderful treadmills indeed..with its own beauties.fresh air..winds..green field..streams,rivers ,lakes,seas ..hills,mountains ..

sports in Nature is always better for me :)))

yes i use treadmill all the time at my gym. the best thing about treadmill is you know how long you have to run and within what time period. whereas, outdoor you will get tired easily and easy to lose focus. if you have other built in options in your treadmill then you stay motivated all the time and never get bored.

I like running but I don’t want to run go outside, becasue I can’t get up early in the morning, so the treadmill is the best of choice. I usually go to the gym to keep in shape, hip pop, belly dance, yoga and running, I go running on the treadmill every friday, this exercise can lose some weight and get in shape. I don’t need to worry weather and air condition, and it is fun when I was running I can watching TV and listening music.

At a place where I live, winter lasts 8 months a year. We have very short warm period. Jogging outside in frost about -40 is very hard and dangerous. Treadmills are necessary really badly in our gyms.:)

I’m not a huge proponent of any kind of indoor workout. Whenever I signed up for a gym membership my thought process went a little like this: ” I’ll go later….there’s still tomorrow…will go after I am done …etc” The only way I got my heart rate up was by kidding myself :) I really prefer the outside when it comes to speed walking or running. It’s such a power booster to realize how easily my mind and body connects in nature. I am actually pretty happy with my level of physical fitness that nasty weather or the dark are almost always a good excuse to take a break :) Always do what you love, be safe and have fun!

I used once a treadmill and fainted, kinda lost my ballance. I think I was dizzy and lost orientation. I wanted to run ahead, but somehow was still on one place. I didn’t know what to do. Probably I din’t move in the beginning but then I moved too fast for fear to fall again and finally everything got blurry in front of me. Definitely it will keep you in shape, just got to use to the idea, that you move your feet and that’s it. I prefer fresh air, walking, but now will be running, I think. I got inspired by one local athlete. He was so tired of running that turned into crawling. He was wheezing and panting but reached his goal. I got a big respect for the guy. That’s a strong will!
