Sending text messages (SMS) has become an easy way for people to communicate. It’s faster than calling and usually more direct. In order to make texting even easier, people started shortening or abbreviating words. Instead of okay, we write OK. Instead of weekend, we write wknd. Sometimes, we even shorten short words, like love, which becomes luv. Although some people don’t like these shortened versions of everyday words, they’re very common. It’s normal for us to find easier ways to communicate, so shortened words are now the norm.

Just like other shortened words, the norm is an expression many people use instead of the longer word normal. It’s OK to use this expression whenever something happens regularly. For example, taking a lunch break at noon is the norm. And, for university students, having finals at the end of the semester is also the norm.

Unfortunately, things that are the norm are not always good. Tennis superstar Stefani Graf supports an organization that helps children who think violence is the norm. Instead of having safe, happy families, these children are hurt at a young age. Because they’re in danger where they live, Stefani tries to help them have a better future.

What kind of things are the norm for you?

Less than 100 years ago you couldn’t see a woman in an office. But now a working  woman as a clerk, manager, computer programmer or even boss is the norm. 20-30 years ago piople used to consider a singl woman with a child as odd. Now there are many single mums in our country and people suppose this is the norm.

I remember once being with my friend in the museum in Vienna. It was an Art gallery and our mistake was to come to see art just an hour before they close. So, we paid a fortune and our tour started but it didn’t last long since just a few minutes before closing, the worker of the museum notified us about to leave. We asked for a few more minutes but the worker just pushed us at the back and was quite angry. Now I know punctuality is the norm for Austrians.

The norm should be also something we think is right to do for us, but it might be  not right for other people. What I mean is that the norm, sometimes, is like a personal things we like and we have to respect to live politely with other people. even though they often are not in agreement with us. In order to use frequently words shortened ,I believe,we should remember to the children that they can’t use those shortened words in written text at the schools, because they think it is normal also and it will became a very bad habit for them. In addition to that ,many young children, have nowadays smartphones and some of them , and it seems the norm ,are able to type alphabetic letters touching the keys on the screen, but then they have problem to write the same letters by their hands in the notebooks.

I always wanted to see Leonardo’s Mona Lisa. So I went to Paris, queued up at the most famous museum of the world, payed an outragous entrance fee..all that to witness how a hype can kill the most beautiful things. I could not believe how people were behaving. Pushing and shoving were just the norm, as well as hundreds of powerful flashes that spoiled a good view to the painting.

I did not fit into the norm, because I left the museum without taking a picture of the world’s most famous smile and also without me in it ;)
