Like all sports, American football has a lot of rules. And different players have different jobs. But the main idea of the game is to get the football and run all the way down the field to make a “touchdown.” If you do that, you win points for your team. It’s not unlike a lot of other sports that way.

If your boss tells you to take the ball and run with it when you’re not playing football, she wants you to act like you’re trying to win a point. She wants you to get started on a project, work as fast or hard as you can, stay away from anything that will stop you from being successful, and get the job done. She wants you to work like you’re a football player trying for a touchdown.

Why is Gary telling Sultan to take the ball and run with it? You’ll find out by reading today’s English lesson about hard work.

Gary:  Here’s the thing about working in this industry. You have to be flexible. Things are always changing.

Sultan:  How do you mean?

Gary:  You never know where a story’s going to go. You have to do your research, then be ready to take the ball and run with it.

Sultan:  OK. Can I do that?

Gary:  I think you can. It just takes some practice. I think you’re going to be a natural.

Rafael:  How about we order a pizza to officially celebrate your new position at StarScoop.com?

Sultan:  That sounds awesome. I’m starving!

Gary:  So, what topping…? Actually, why don’t you order it? Your choice.

Sultan:  Maybe I have to write this down.

Rafael:  Yeah. They’re going to ask you what size you want.

Sultan:  Like when Jessica and I went to the coffee shop. Small, medium, large?

Rafael:  Exactly.

Gary:  They’ll want to know when you want it delivered and where, so have the address ready.

Sultan:  I have our address. Toppings?

Rafael:  Yeah, actually, American pizzas you can order all kinds of toppings. Meats, vegetables… you can even order pizza without cheese.

Sultan:  Pizza with no cheese?

Gary:  Yeah, some people prefer pizza that way. Here. Rafael and I will write down some toppings for you to think about. Then you can take the ball and run with it.

Sultan:  OK. First time for everything.

Rafael:  That’s the spirit.

Rafael and Gary want to celebrate with Sultan. He accepted a job with StarScoop.com, and he’s excited about the work. Since Sultan is extremely hungry, a pizza sounds like a good idea to him. But Sultan has never ordered a pizza on the phone before.

Gary and Rafael give Sultan some ideas about what he will need to know. They tell him to be ready to say what size pizza he wants, and where he wants the pizza to arrive. Most importantly, Sultan should know which toppings he wants on the pizza. Rafael and Gary make a list of toppings for him to choose from, and Sultan gets ready to call the pizza company.

Are you willing to take the ball and run with it? Share an example of a time you did!

When I first started to learn English I had to be with someone who could show me the way to fluency and so on, but on my side I had also to take the ball and run with it.
