In the history of metal, no young band has been more successful than Unlocking the Truth. It’s true that bands are often started in college, or even in high school. But the three members of Unlocking the Truth are now 12 and 13 years old. And they began making music together in 2007!

Unlocking the Truth are singer and guitarist Malcolm Brickhouse, singer and bassist Alec Atkins, and singer and drummer Jarad Dawkins. The boys met at a birthday party in 2005 and decided to start a band. With the help of their parents, Unlocking the Truth began to play street concerts which made them more and more popular. As of today, they’ve played with famous metal bands like Guns N’ Roses and Motorhead. They’ve been written about in newspapers and magazines, and played in popular music festivals.

Lily and Brian think Unlocking the Truth is amazing. Do you agree? Find out more about this incredible band in today’s English lesson.

Brian

Lily:  Brian, I am obsessed with a new band. Do you want to know more about this band?

Brian:  Yeah. Who are you talking about?

Lily:  OK, it’s kind of weird, because it’s metal. And I don’t usually like metal, but I can’t help but love Unlocking the Truth. They’re amazing!

Brian:  Is that the teenage metal band?

Lily:  Yeah. They are so good. They’re in eighth grade. And they just signed this $1.7 million record deal.

Brian:  Really?

Lily:  Yeah. I saw them on “The Colbert Report.” They’re amazing.

Brian:  That’s really intense. That’s really cool, but do you sometimes think children performing is more of a novelty? Not that they aren’t talented, but that that’s why they get more attention.

Lily:  I’ve thought about that, but when you listen to more of their stuff, it’s clear they’re child prodigies. They’re not normal children. They’re super calm. They definitely have the drive to succeed. And it’s just infectious.

Brian:  I just hope that their parents are supportive of them, and that they still are able to have a career after they get older.

Lily:  This must be a dream come true for them.

Brian:  Yeah. I’ll have to check them out.

Lily has a new favorite band called Unlocking the Truth. She’s surprised at how much she likes them because they’re a metal band, which isn’t her favorite kind of music. But Lily can’t stop listening to them. What’s even more interesting is that the band members are all teenagers. In fact, they’re in the eighth grade.

Brian wants to learn more about Unlocking the Truth, and he’s happy that they’re successful. He wonders if the band is so popular because its members are kids, though. Brian believes they’re skilled musicians, but he thinks that they might not be so well-known if they weren’t so young.

What do you think of Unlocking the Truth? Have you ever played in a band?

Never heard of this band either. But I am always happy when see youngsters are so talented and devoted, do the things by their own. It’s a good example for their peers.
