When you were a kid, did you ever get so excited the night before your birthday or a holiday that you were unable to sleep? Did you lie in bed, full of anticipation because you were so eager for the next day to arrive?

As we grow older, we wait excitedly for different things. You might wait in anticipation for a phone call about a job you really want, or an e-mail saying you were accepted to your first choice university. No matter our age, there will always be something that makes us wait nervously.

Brian tells Gary about how he’s waiting for a call from somebody he likes. Find out more in today’s English lesson about looking forward to something.

Gary:  Brian, where were you last night?

Brian:  I went to a bar.

Gary:  OK.

Brian:  I was just hanging out with some friends. And there was this really cute girl. I asked her out on a date.

Gary:  That’s exciting!

Brian:  I got her number, and I texted her this morning. But she hasn’t gotten back, and I’m so anxious. I’m so worried.

Gary:  That’s why you were pacing back and forth in the kitchen.

Brian:  Yeah, I’m just waiting for a response. And I just keep going over what happened last night.

Gary:  The anticipation has been killing you!

Brian:  I know! I was trying to think if I made a good impression or not.

Gary:  Let’s not go the negative route. There’s been no rejection. Silence is not a rejection. Let’s take your mind off of this.

Brian:  That would be good.

Gary:  We should put a movie in.

Brian:  That might help me get rid of some of this nervous energy.

Gary:  Yeah. You don’t have to overthink anything. You can just sit there and relax.

Brian:  Yeah, let’s do it.

Brian recently met a cute girl at a bar and they gave each other their phone numbers. Now he’s waiting for a response to the text he sent her. The anticipation is making him walk back and forth across his kitchen. It’s also making him think too much about whether he’s made a good impression or not.

Gary is very happy to hear that Brian met a girl. He is being a supportive friend by helping Brian to not spend too much time thinking about rejection. He suggests that they watch a movie to keep Brian busy and to help him feel less nervous.

Have you ever been so full of anticipation that it made you nervous? What did you do to help your nervous feeling?
