Every winter, people all around the world go to the nearest mountain to ski. Some people even travel to different countries to find the best powder. Skiing is so popular that new skis are made and sold every year. It’s hard to believe that people have been skiing for more than 2,500 years.

The best part about skiing is that there are so many different types. For example, you can downhill, cross-country, or telemark. One event in the Winter Olympics, called the biathlon, even puts skiing together with guns. There are styles of skiing for everyone. All you need are skis, friends, and snow!

Marni and Gary are talking about skiing. Do they like going to the mountain? Find out more in today’s English lesson.

Gary:  Marni.

Marni:  Yes?

Gary:  The winter is here and I am so excited to go skiing.

Marni:  Oh, wow. Yeah, I’ve never been. I’m actually terrified of skiing.

Gary:  Really?

Marni:  I’m so worried that I’m just going to face-plant or wipe out that I’ve never done it.

Gary:  You’d like to know, then, that there is a snow bunny hill, which is actually really nice. It’s a very gradual, very simple thing to go down.

Marni:  So, that’s the beginner’s slope?

Gary:  Yeah, you put your boots on, you get your poles. You ride the chairlift up, and you just glide down.

Marni:  Really? You make it sound so easy and I have all this anxiety about it.

Gary:  The people who are going on the really, super difficult, double black diamond, terrifying skiing slopes… you don’t want to do that.

Marni:  So, the bunny slope, that’s for me?

Gary:  Yeah! Come with us in maybe two weekends.

Marni:  I don’t know. Are you sure you guys aren’t going to laugh at me?

Gary:  We will not laugh at you.

Marni:  Well, I am going to fall on my face.

Gary:  I will, too.

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Gary likes to go skiing, but Marni has never tried. She has anxiety about skiing and she is scared that she will fall on her face. But Gary tells Marni that she can learn to ski on the bunny slope.

Gary likes the winter because he can go skiing. He invites Marni to come with his friends to the mountain in two weeks. Marni says that she wants to go with them, but that they cannot laugh at her for being a bad skier.

Do you like skiing? Would you rather go down a bunny slope or a double black diamond?

Thanks,Julito, for a sweet praise to my address. I tried to conquire the double black diamond and was rewarded with great impressions. Each next gliding down was better and much easier ,but I afraid to think what would be if I failed.
And there left a few slopes I’m still unready to try.

Yep,son of sun, I’m lucky to be in skiing. When I was a kid, I couldn’t go down even from the smallest hill, it irritated me a lot.Now I’m pleased.

Geographic distribution doesn’t allow it here :))

I was thinking, is it possible to try skiing on hills of sands? :)) I mean it’s also slippery :D It can be a good replacement in sunny warmphilic places. :))

I agree with Habiba18. For people like us who live in places where it doesn’t snow skiing is just a pie in the sky.

So, I’ll just sit at home and dream of skiing down a double black diamond slope with my favorite hero.

This year I at first have tried a double black diamond and …oh,I understood that it’s mine.Lots of adrenalin during sliding down on a high speed and much satisfaction at the bottom .Of course, before deciding to seize that slope, I had 15 mins of fighting with my fear, but result was worth of it.
Such a huge pleasure after realising that I could do it.

I am not into skiing , i have prefered to visit warmer places . In my country we have several ski resorts. I think that  it is an expensive  sport :chair lift, ski equipment , hotels , travel back and forth, all amount to a lot of money, but worth it if you have the dough  and for a few days off ,as royal people do,   slide  down a slippery slope  ,and pray  to God that nobody, not even  a tree or rock gets in the way  .

Yes Ola, there is snow in Turkey. It’s a four season country. And there some very good skiing centers. I just don’t want to go alone. I need company ;)

Scienceboy, skiing is like sliding and weight shifting from one leg into the other and with this gliding on one leg with the back one lifted in the air. Mastering technics makes skiing fast and more fun. Many people think it’s the same as walking- no it’s sliding and gliding.
Sorry for being egoistical leaving the wolf on the trail. The instinct of self preservation had driven me in that moment.
Is there any snow in turkey? It’s a big country., there should be some.

I have tried to ski for once. It was not so easy but was not so difficult either. I haven’t learnd how to ski but I had a lot of fun. I’d love to go skiing again and learn that sport.

Ola, why did you leave this poor wolf fella there? As a werewolf, I am offended :)

Agree, I love watching them too. But mountain skiing can still be tried on,not double black diamond but a bunny slope and the longest one, for 5 hours, otherwise it’s going to be a chairlift up and down all day long.
