We celebrate birthdays and weddings with big, beautiful, delicious cakes. But what if you want the sweet treat and there isn’t a holiday to celebrate? Or what if you don’t want a whole cake just for yourself? A cupcake is the perfect size for when you want to bite into some sugary frosting and soft cake any day of the year.

Cupcakes have become so popular that in some cities there are bakeries that only sell the small cakes. You can walk into a bakery and see many different kinds of cupcake flavors for customers to choose from. But even if there are many choices, cupcakes aren’t for everyone. Some people think that they’re too sweet.

Marni tells Brian about how much she loves these small cakes. Find out more in today’s English lesson about this popular dessert.

Marni:  I just passed by this amazing bakery. And the cupcakes, they were just calling out to me, “Eat me! Eat me!”

Brian:  But, Marni, it’s 9:00am. Do you love sweets that much?

Marni:  I do. I have the worst sweet tooth. I just want to treat myself. Even though, like you said, it’s nine in the morning. I could justify breakfast cupcakes.

Brian:  Desserts aren’t my thing. I’m really into salty foods. So I crave french fries and popcorn. Cupcakes just aren’t my thing.

Marni:  I guess not. I just love sugary food. A really good chocolate cupcake with some simple frosting. Just the best!

Brian:  Maybe if you topped it with bacon, I would be more interested.

Marni:  There are bacon cupcakes. And that would certainly qualify as breakfast cupcake.

Brian:  Well, then, let’s go get some breakfast.

Marni has a big sweet tooth and loves cupcakes. Even though they’re actually a dessert, she wants to eat cupcakes for breakfast. She especially enjoys a simple chocolate cupcake with good frosting. Sometimes it’s difficult for her to walk by a bakery without stopping in to pick up a few cupcakes.

Brian doesn’t share Marni’s love for sweets. He prefers salty foods like french fries and popcorn and doesn’t really like cupcakes. But Brian does love bacon, and he was excited to hear that there may be cupcakes with bacon on them. He might try cupcakes after all.

Do you like sweets? Do you have a favorite kind of cupcake?

Ha, ha, dear Julito, normally the mention of hot and spicy food makes my mouth water. But this time your suggestion makes my eyes water.

S&W, it’s nice to know that you also share my love for hot and spicy food. I’ll tell you what, let’s get together one day, treat ourselves to some real hot and spicy food, get drunk (I mean, sprite!) and have a wild time.

And let’s invite our dear Julito and serve him some cupcakes with red chillie toppings. Deal?

I have a sweet tooth and I just love cupcakes, actually all kind of desserts.

But unlike our friends S&W and Shoba, I cannot even eat a bite of spicy food. It’s not my thing.

Dear Shoba , as a girl from the south of India that you are, i understand that you like to relish on spicy and hot food and by hot i mean , very hot food, but here´s the deal , buy cupcakes and instead of asking for a topping of chocolate ,ask that they come with red chillies. jejejeje

I only have to walk two blocks from my home and there it is , a new  bakery that exclusively sells cupcakes , or better said, a creamery festival enticing me to buy them and actually my eyes popped out at the sight of them, Marni, you are not alone on this.  I have the money ,i have the will ,then i remember that i am diabetic and i shouldn´t give in to the temptation. deep sigh .. i keep on walking but i think that next time i would pretend that i have had a sudden lost of memory and i will buy a couple of cupcakes ,and may God and my pancreas forgive me. jejejejej

I don’t like sweets that much and hence cupcakes are not my cup of tea. I usually prefer hot and spicy food.

However, once in a while, I grow a sweet tooth and snack on chocolates.

I have a big sweet tooth so needless to say, I absolutely adore cupcakes, especially with dark chocolate or caramel.
