Children often want to eat the same food over and over again. They know what they like, and they’re afraid of trying something new. Kids also enjoy listening to the same books read to them night after night. It makes them feel good to hear something they already know or to read along with their parents.

But most adults become sick and tired of eating the same things and reading the same books every day. With all of the food and entertainment available to us, many of us have learned to regularly look for different experiences… whether it’s a popular restaurant, an exciting movie, or a new sport. We start to feel sick and tired of things that are in our lives every day. We want everything to be better than what we had the day before!

Gary and Brian are sick and tired of two very different things. Learn more in today’s English lesson about two guys who are quite the pair.

Gary:  You know, I am sick and tired of thinking about love.

Brian:  “Looking for love in all the wrong places…”

Gary:  My relationship with Jessica failed. My last girlfriend and I broke up after three months. And Sara? She’s obviously not interested.

Brian:  I’m the one who’s in love with someone on the other side of the world.

Gary:  We’re quite the pair. Brian, what is going on with your car?

Brian:  What do you mean?

Gary:  It’s filthy! When was the last time you washed it?

Brian:  What year is it?

Gary:  Gross. I could write my name on the hood!

Brian:  Hey, I am a student. I can’t afford a car wash.

Gary:  Wash it yourself. All you need is a bucket, some soapy water, and a few sponges.

Brian:  But it’s so dirty.

Gary:  There is nothing that a little elbow grease can’t clean. I’ll help you.

Brian:  Do I have to vacuum it out, too? Maybe I should wear gloves.

Gary:  Um, yes. I could see parts of food on the floor.

Brian:  I’m so sick and tired of cleaning!

Gary is talking about his failed relationships with Brian. It didn’t work out with the last few women that Gary dated and he’s feeling like he will never find love. But then, he sees Brian’s filthy car and thoughts of love are forgotten.

Gary can’t stop himself from pointing out that Brian’s car is extremely dirty. He doesn’t understand how Brian can let the car become so gross, and he even offers to help Brian wash it. Gary knows that some soap, sponges, and a bucket of water is all that’s needed to make Brian’s car look OK again.

What do you do when you’re feeling sick and tired of something or someone?

When I’m feeling sick and tired of someone, I may try to ignore the person. As for things, I may avoid doing them for a while and start doing them again when I feel OK.
