Last week, we told you about the Many Languages, One World (MLOW) essay contest. ELS Educational Services created this contest as a part of the United Nations Academic Impact initiative. This week, we want to introduce you to the winners of MLOW. Each winner studied the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Then, they wrote an essay. Each essay was about learning language in order to understand other cultures.

The 2016 MLOW winners put a lot of effort into their essays. It was difficult for many of them because they could not write the essay in their first language. However, their hard work paid off because they each won a trip to the Global Youth Forum in New York City. This is a big compliment! Now, they can work together to share new ideas at the United Nations headquarters.

In today’s English video, the participants share their feelings about winning this exciting contest.

Tom dos Santos I’m here to tell how excited I am about going to New York.

Shazana I honestly didn’t expect to be chosen.

Federico It’s really a compliment, so I’m really proud.

Matthew I’m still not a hundred percent sure that all of this is real.

Amani The process of writing the essay was not very easy. It had its hardships.

Tom Okot It hasn’t been an easy walk for me, since Spanish is not my first language. But I’m happy that I was able to put across my point and my views.

Shazana It rather felt like sharing my own experiences and telling my personal story.

Jorge I put quite a lot of effort into my essay. I worked on it mainly at night after dinner, which is the moment I feel most inspired.

Rind I worked really hard, and it paid off.

Maria Jose I’m just… really humbled that I can collaborate in some ways to make this world a better place today.

Tom dos Santos I really want to be a part of change.

Shazana I see it as an extraordinary opportunity.

Federico I can’t wait to be in New York, I can’t wait to be at the UN, and I can’t wait to meet all the other talented participants.

The 2016 Many Languages, One World (MLOW) winners come from all around the world! For example, Amani is from Tanzania, and Tom dos Santos is from Brazil. The winners are very happy to be participants in this wonderful contest. Rind feels amazing, and Federico thinks it is a nice compliment. Matthew lives in New York, and he feels like winning is almost too good to be true. But it is true! These winners will all meet in New York at the end of July!

Writing the essay was difficult for many winners because they could not write in their first language. Tom Okot was happy to share his ideas. Jorge says that he put a lot of effort into his essay. For Shazana, writing the essay was like sharing her story. Soon, these wonderful winners will collaborate to solve important problems together. Maria Jose is very excited to do this. All the winners are happy to visit the United Nations headquarters.

How do you feel when you win something? What do you know about the United Nations?
