Imagine you walk into a big grocery store. You can smell many wonderful things, like baked bread, roses, fresh herbs, ripe raspberries, and chocolate chip cookies. And then, you smell something gross. What could it be? What smells so rotten? Welcome to the cheese aisle, where all kinds of stinky cheeses wait for you.
Not all cheeses reek. Some, like cheddar and mozzarella, have almost no smell. To make cheese, bacteria is added to milk. Sometimes, the bacteria gives the cheese a very pungent smell. Limburger, blue, and camembert are all famous stinky cheeses. They might smell bad, but some cheese lovers can’t get enough of them!
Kelsey doesn’t understand why Andy loves stinky cheeses. Listen to this English lesson to find out why he thinks they’re so amazing.

Andy_H: Oh my gosh! I have just discovered my brand new love. It is stinky cheeses!
Kelsey: Wait, what?
Andy_H: Oh yeah. Nothing like a blue or a camembert. Ah! They’re just delighting my soul. I know they may reek, they may be really pungent, but stinky cheeses are just really doing it for me nowadays.
Kelsey: But Andy, they’re disgusting. They smell gross, and that’s so much a part of taste. How can you even eat those?
Andy_H: Because they’re (A) edible, and (B) there are tons of amazing ways that you can use them. They’re perfect for wine pairing. I know that we have a lot of people in this world that can’t get enough wine, especially the Millennials. It may be pungent, there may be bacteria in it, but guess what? There’s bacteria in meat. We eat it, too. There just really are some amazing, amazing stinky cheeses out there.
Kelsey: You know, I really just think they smell rotten. I’m really good with just some cheddar or American cheese.
Andy_H: Well, I think that those smell rotten.
Kelsey: I bet you like them.
Andy_H: Well, yeah. I do.

Gross! Kelsey just discovered that Andy loves stinky cheeses. She’s shocked. Camembert and blue cheeses reek. They’re covered in bacteria. They smell like they’re rotten. How can Andy possibly think these cheeses are edible? Kelsey would much rather have American cheese, cheddar cheese, or any other cheese that doesn’t smell.
The pungent smells of these cheeses don’t bother Andy. In fact, he can’t get enough of them. Bacteria is no problem for him, and he knows that many other Millennials feel the same way. It’s become very popular for Millennials to enjoy stinky cheeses and good wine together. But Andy does admit that he’ll still eat non-pungent cheeses, too.
Do you think stinky cheeses are gross or delicious? What’s your favorite type of cheese?
