Does your country have a national pastime? For the United States, it is the game of baseball. People sit in stadiums, watch TV in bars, or gather together at home to watch this exciting game. Most people have a favorite team from their hometown or their home state. At the end of the season, the two best teams in the country play against each other in the World Series.

This year, the World Series was very interesting. The two teams playing were the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago Cubs. Both teams had not won the World Series in many years, so their fans were very excited. In fact, it had been so long since the Cubs had won that many people believed the team was cursed! Even though the Cubs have not won in a long time, they still have many fans. In baseball, people love to cheer for the underdog.

During the last game of the World Series, it seemed like the Cubs would lose again this year. They were behind by 2 runs. Then, something crazy happened! Listen to Andy and Marni talk about the amazing final game of the World Series.

Andy_H:  Wow, wow, wow!

Marni:  Are you talking about that most amazing game of baseball?

Andy_H:  Literally the greatest game of baseball, not that I’ve ever seen… the greatest game ever played! I mean, these guys came back from a 3-1 lead, which they did against my hometown, the Cleveland Indians, but…

Marni:  Oh, sorry, yeah.

Andy_H:  Yeah, it was a pretty rough night. That being said, I had one of the best experiences watching baseball.

Marni:  Yeah.

Andy_H:  Because by the end of that game, it almost didn’t matter who won.

Marni:  Yeah, I kind of had that, too. I think as an Indians fan, you still had to be incredibly proud of them because that game was amazing, and it could have been anybody’s game at that point. You know, they came back from…

Andy_H:  With a home run that hit the camera right on the corner wall! I mean, you couldn’t make that up if you wrote it in a book.

Marni:  Extra innings, rain delay, I mean, just so many things happening, so much tension, excitement, and yeah, both teams hadn’t won the World Series… the Cubs hadn’t won in, what, 108 years?

Andy_H:  All right, I do want to speak to this. I may be a little bit biased, but I want to remind everybody one thing. The city of Chicago has won how many titles in those 108 years? The city of Cleveland has won… one.

Marni:  You’ve got basketball.

Andy_H:  Yeah, we got basketball this year, but I want to remind everybody, the city of Chicago… it wasn’t the first time they won. Their hockey team won earlier that year.

Marni:  All right, all right, fair enough, but…

Andy_H:  Just saying, great game, and the Cubs are the World Series champions.

Marni:  And kudos.

Andy and Marni are talking about the final game of the World Series. Andy wanted the Indians to win because he is from Ohio. However, he thinks that it was still the greatest baseball game ever played, no matter who won. Everything was crazy and exciting, from the rain delay to the extra innings to the home run that actually hit one of the cameras! The game was so amazing that even a writer could not make up a story this good.

Even though Andy thought it was an awesome ball game, he still wishes the Indians had won. He tells Marni that sports teams from the city of Chicago have won many championships. For example, the Chicago hockey team won this year. The city of Cleveland has only won one championship in history, so he thinks the Indians deserved to win this year. However, he will just have to accept that it was a great game and that the Cubs are the World Series champions.

Are you interested in baseball? Do you have a favorite sports team?
