Watching a game can be as fun as playing one. Sometimes, it’s fun to imagine instead of actually do the work. This is true with sports, chess matches, and even video games! Video game streaming is when people watch other people play video games. They watch to learn cheat codes, shortcuts, and get a sense of the game. Twitch is a popular channel where people can do video game streaming.

You don’t get firsthand experience playing the game when you’re just watching it on a channel like Twitch. But some people like to watch video games and nerd out with their friends. Other people think this is really lame. Why would you want to watch other people play video games? Shouldn’t we learn to do these things through our own experience?

Gary loves watching video game streaming channels. Listen as he tells Dominique about it in today’s English lesson.

Gary:  Oh my god! I just learned the coolest thing while I was watching the game earlier.

Dominique:   Wait, what?

Gary:  Twitch is my favorite! I love watching this stuff, it is so great. I earned the best Easter egg.

Dominique:  Are you talking about games?

Gary:  No…

Dominique:  And watching it?

Gary:  Do you know what Twitch is?

Dominique:  No, but you just said you were watching a game, you weren’t playing the game?

Gary:  No, it was a video game streaming! I was watching other people play the game. And I was learning about these things that I had no idea about because I don’t know the shortcuts. So, I got to learn from people who are super, super advanced!

Dominique:  So, you were cheating instead of getting firsthand experience?

Gary:  No, I was learning about something that I then have to try to do. But it’s not always the easiest thing to do.

Dominique:  Yeah, no… that sounds really boring.

Gary:  So, it’s super cool! I get to watch these teams play against each other. They share cheat codes so that you can… cheat, as you were saying, and get some extra bonuses and ideas and things to do in the game. But then you can nerd out! And just have so much fun and pwn everybody!

Dominique:  So… you’re like sitting there in front of your TV or computer screen with like a notepad taking notes?

Gary:  Sometimes.

Dominique:  That sounds… I mean, I said it already, but it sounds really, really boring and kind of lame.

Gary:  Yeah, it’s the awesome kind of lame.

Gary learned something really cool when he was watching Twitch. Dominique asks him what? Gary was able to earn the best Easter egg. Dominique doesn’t know what he’s talking about. She asks him if he’s talking about watching people playing games. Gary asks her if she knows about Twitch and video game streaming. Dominique says no. She is surprised that anyone would want to watch other people play video games.

Gary says he was watching video game streaming. He likes watching it because he can learn shortcuts and watch super advanced people play the game. Dominique suggests he was cheating instead of learning firsthand. Gary says no, it’s not cheating. He learns by watching. Dominique says that’s boring. Gary likes that he can nerd out and learn cheat codes. Dominique thinks that’s lame. Gary says it’s an awesome kind of lame.

What video games do you like to play? Do you watch video game streaming?

I have a question, is this sentence alright? “it’s fun to imagine instead of actually do the work”, cos in my view it should be “instead of actually doing the work”. Could anybody explain what’s going on in here?

Even if it sounds lame to watch games rather than playing them, but through watching , you can learn things ,you couldn’t have learned by playing. So as they say, information obtained in four ways: observation, experience, experiment, research.

In fact, I’m not into playing video games or even watching other people playing!

I have a busy agenda as an English teacher, and I guess I can’t spend time with such an interesting acitvity like this!

I don’t remember I have watched a game, especially a video game; I think it’s lame to see other people’s game! How can we learn from watching other people’s games! Playing a game need skill and skill comes from doing something and diligence, not from watching!

I hate watching games, soccer or video game streaming. I prefer to play game. I have played some games on mobile or computer, but not a lot, and continuously. Sometimes playing some games could be fun.

Video gaming is not my thing. But my brothers love to play war games and other online games I’m clueless about, but they never watch a game, what’s fun about that?
