We all love to wine and dine. Whether it is at a cafe or a fancy restaurant, it is nice to go out to different places. It is exciting and fun. But sometimes, don’t you feel like there is something missing? Do you maybe wish you had a cuddly or fluffy friend to join you for your night out?

There are now pet restaurants where there are animals hanging out inside. You can eat your meal or sip on your coffee while you pet a furry friend! Some are called cat cafes, where there are a bunch of cats lying around. Some people think the idea is not sanitary or civilized, though. Is it disgusting to eat or drink with litter boxes around?

Marni is curious about a cat cafe in the neighborhood. Listen as she and Dominique talk it out in today’s English lesson.

Marni:  So, Dominique, I was driving down the street the other day, and I saw this cat cafe where you go, and it’s like, you know, coffee, tea, whatever food items, and you are just surrounded by cats!

Dominique:  That is disgusting!

Marni:  Really? You think so?

Dominique:  Pets are not civilized people. I mean…

Marni:  Well, they’re not people.

Dominique:  I wouldn’t even want to set foot in a place that had pets in a restaurant! I mean, what about the floating hair from the pets? What if it gets in my food? Like, ew! No!

Marni:  So, what my initial thought was, ew, the sanitary aspect of it. But, I guess um, so I have a good friend who’s been there, and she showed me pictures and the whole thing. And so, you go in, and there’s just tables everywhere, and there’s cats, and there’s all kinds of, you know like, cat condos for them. And there’s all these little doors everywhere that they can go in and out of, and behind the doors are the litter boxes, where all the unseemly dirty stuff is. So, inside the actual cafe is very clean.

Marni was driving down the street when she saw a cat cafe. It is a regular cafe but with a bunch of cats! Dominique thinks that’s disgusting because cats are not civilized people. They don’t belong in a cafe. She would hate to eat something with a bunch of cat hair floating around. What if it lands in her food?

Marni thought about that a little bit. But her good friend has gone there and says it’s sanitary. There are tables all around with cats hanging out. The cats have little condos where they can hang out, too. There are doors for them to go into their litter boxes. The gross stuff is out of sight. But… not out of mind?

Do you think a cat cafe is cute or gross? Do you want to go to a cafe and pet the kitties?
