John:  Being in Philadelphia was a lot of fun. There’s so much cool history there.

You know I saw the Liberty Bell where the Declaration of Independence was written but the
one thing I missed were the Rocky stairs.

Chad:  Oh yeah. Yeah I remember those stairs a lot watching the movie, man it’s pretty inspiring seeing him run up and down and shaking his fists in the air and…

John:  Yeah. I wanted to do the same thing. I wanted to see the stairs like him and jog up it—you know be all sweaty and get to the top and we just didn’t have time.

Chad:  Probably would have been pretty weird to do that with your friends there.

John:  That’s true! When did that movie come out that was a long time ago?

Chad:  Yeah. Like early ‘80s. I remember watching the first one with the trainer Mickey just inspiring Rocky to go from like a meat-packer guy to, you know, the heavyweight champion of the world.

John:  Yeah. I remember he would be in the meat lockers punching the meat and his, his hands would be all bloody and be rooting him on because he was the underdog in his boxing matches.

Chad:  Yeah. Apollo Creed, the current heavyweight champ, definitely had all the glitz and the glamour and the money and the professional trainers and Rocky just had good old Mickey.

John:  And he ended up winning.

Chad:  Yeah. I think his second time around the first time he tied. It was a draw.

John:  Right.

Chad:  And the second time he trained harder and won. Yeah it had some great music to it very inspiring “Eye of the Tiger”...

John:  Good stuff that we still listen to.

Chad:  Oh the Italian Stallion...Rocky Balboa.

Discussion

Rocky is as much a cultural icon as a part of movie history. Rocky represents the ideal hero in his commitment to succeed. Throughout life we are placed in situations where our back is to the wall and it’s either win or lose; do or die. When faced with this, each individual looks within themselves and to their heros for strength and inspiration. Rocky represents this hero; not the strongest, not the fastest, maybe not even the smartest. This hero is the best he can be and this is the legend that remains to be retold again and again.

Until next week,
