Between the theater, videos and DVDs, and online services like Netflix, there are so many movies out there. How can you decide which are worth checking out? Sure, there’s advertising, but sometimes the trailer or commercial sets up false expectations.

So is it best to just rely on reviews? Or on word of mouth? Or do even recommendations from friends have their pitfalls? In today’s English lesson about movie English, hear what Jason and Mason think.

Jason:  I like seeing movies, but I just don’t see all that many, because sometimes I find it hard to know what’s good.

Mason:  I’d say until somebody goes and you get their recommendation, it’s pretty hard to actually know if it’s going to be good. Because the previews, they’ve got it down to a science. Like, I’m gonna make the preview that gets the guys who like action-y, sports stuff, and I’m gonna make the preview for people who like, you know, intellectual dramas. And it’s the same movie, but they can show it both ways.

Jason:  That’s true, I’ve seen people re-cut trailers of movies, like re-cut a comedy to make it look like a drama.

Mason:  If too many people say a movie’s awesome, I’m probably going to hate it, just on principle.

Jason:  Right.

Mason:  ‘Cause they’ll set my expectation way too high, and I’ll go and I’ll be like, “Oh, it wasn’t really as good as everyone said.”

Jason:  Yeah. Sometimes word of mouth leads me astray, you know? The one I thought of now, it’s The Number 23. It’s a movie with Jim Carrey that everyone hated. But I saw it for some reason anyway, and I liked it a lot. So if I had listened to those people, I would have missed out.

Mason:  Huh. I remember that. I never saw it. But I’d give it a shot. On your recommendation, Jason, I’d give it a shot.

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Jason tells Mason that he likes seeing movies, but has difficulty knowing which movies will be good. Mason agrees. He likes getting a recommendation from a friend, because movie previews or trailers can be misleading.

However, there are problems with getting recommendations, too. Mason says that if too many people tell him that a movie’s great, then he has to rebel against popular opinion. Jason says that the opposite’s true, too; if he listened to all the people who said a movie was bad, he might have missed out on a movie he actually liked, such as The Number 23.

Mason’s glad to know that Jason liked this movie. Maybe he’ll see it now, on Jason’s recommendation.

How do you decide which movies to see? Whose movie recommendations do you trust? Are you more or less likely to like a movie if everyone else says it’s good or bad?

Olya, I used to watch horror movies, but now I’m not with you.

I began to feel bad while watching cruel or brutal ones. I also stopped watching movies where there are  fantastic personages with strange appearances. Once I watched Pirates of the Caribbean, and I felt so bad because of the ugly images. :( Oh, never again for me!

Do you remember a Soviet movie Viy (Вий) ? I still tremble with fear while recalling it. :O

knuschu,  I think that  we have share sentiments  about Bond´s films, Sean Connery  was the epitome of what  a spy should looked like   .  The original image of Bond  is so ingrained in my mind that  ,as good as they were , the next generations of Bonds  couldn´t enticed me to watch  their films.

I love almost all kinds of movies as I’m an inveterate cinemaddict.

Unfortunately I don’t have much time to spend on going out lately, but when night comes, it’s my time to watch TV. Still  I prefer watching movies at the modern cinemas as I enjoy impressive effects.

To chose somerthing interesting to see, I listen to people’s advice as it’s  the best ads ever. Who or what  can tell you better what is worth seeing than people? If you don’t try an attempt to stop them  telling the plot of the movie, you may not go there already as you know everything in tiny details.:) So I always prevent talkative people  to open me all secrets of a movie.

Thus communication with people in such a way helps me a lot to chose which film to see. Mostly people’s opinions are right and I can fully trust them.

My point of view is that I don´t trust  trailers, advertising, and all the bullshit of thumbs up, I have followed that lead only to realize that the flick  was  a flop ,but it was too late , I have  had already pitched in 8 dollars at the  ticket booth. I have senior discount now , what can I make out of this ? is this good or bad news ????  jejejeje . I  follow my own instint: Tarantino, Scorsese  and  a few others  directors  are my favourities, of course , the cast  is  important.

Well, don´t forget to buy  popcorn  , they are part of the fun.   enjoy !!!

How do I decide which movies to see?  The answer is simple. I follow my habitual  scheme  of research.

If I have a particular mood for particular genre of movie or if some movie is in the public eye   and if that movie in addition has  got an active ads in the media, I switch my gadgets on to visit my favourite cinema site where  I will certainly find everything I want to know about any movie: from trailers to the blunt comments of ordinary people and film critics. I rely on those comments . Mostly the viewpoints about movies are  based on people’s long experience of comparison and the professional estimation in the field of cinema industry.  As I said there are also many ordinary people ( the big fans of movies) with very helpful, honest and clever opinions about one or other movie.

Any recommendations are unnecessary if I tend to see the movie that is based on the novel  I read some time ago.

There are the excellent movies after the preview I have a strong urge to rush to the bookstore to buy and read a novel immediately then : )

It’s very important to admit,  when English, baby! offers  the lesson where we can have a discussion about  new movie or cartoon I willingly read the lesson and comments of people which encourage me to watch it as quickly as possible. :)

In this way, English, baby! and its members oriented me to watch such remarkable products of cinema industry as “Brave”, “Hunger games”, “Australia”, “Something’s Gotta Give”.  To be quite candid,  there was no tiny hint of disappointment by the end of movie. My expectations were not failed.

In contrary to these good movies I mentioned above, one new Russian movie I was yearning to see so much caused a  discontent in my mind.  I anticipated to see the great staging  of the novel that laid behind this movie. Moreover I’m  a big fan of a main  actor of this movie. As a result  I did not find anything touching for myself in this movie though the ads and the references where superb.

In conclusion, I don’t designate my time wasted if I ‘ve watched a movie without any advanced recommendations.  I watch it  because I want to watch.

I watch movies  in order to get emotions and in order   to form my own viewpoint afterwards.

Nice lesson today. What can be better than to talk about movies? :)

P.S.  Dear Julito, it is time to mention about your recommendation to watch touching movie “Eat Pray Love”  . You see how useful advices can be.

We go seldom to the cinema. Recently we went to the latest James Bond movie inspired by the advertising and the public attention, but I was little disappointed. I have no idea, what the best solution is. I afraid, the best is to make your own experience – but it might cost a boring evening ;-)

I love comedies like Starsky and Hutch, Wedding Crashes or Hitch. I watched Hitch in the theatre. It wasn’t bad, but I prefer watching the “theatre movies” with special effects like Avatar, Harry Potter or the latest James Bond, Skyfall ( the best one from all James Bond franchise). I like thrillers a lot like Score ( to me, it’s the best thriller), but I don’t like dramas like Anna Karenina, the new movie with Keira Knightley starring is not for me. I like a happy end. Anyway, the movie I anxiously watch for to come out on the screens is Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters. I watched a trailer – oh I just loved it. But got to find a company as none of my friends and relatives likes horror movies :( Who’d like to watch it with me? :) Promise, I won’t leave you during the show ;)

And one thing I noticed, if a movie hugely advertised, it’s not going to be a good one. Checked so many times.
