The latest sample of the monthly German magazine “Dein Spiegel” says that the FAO encourages people to eat insects rather than beef or pork. They use scientific facts like that the meat of insects actually has about the same consistence as the meat of any other land-living animal. But they also use interviews with people who regularly eat insects and say the taste is comparable to some sorts of food we already know. They even mention that in Cambodia they prepare some poisonous spiders.
Reason for the FAO to show this interest in the cuisine of other cultures is: They think that by eating insects we could solve some of the problems the production of meat other than insects brings along – like deforestation and violation of the rights of the natives living there for the production of soy, overweight, cancer caused bysome sources of meat etc.

The latest sample of the German magazine “bleib gesund” had an article that explained that many people actually would have healthy teeth if they didn’t ignore the currently most common scientific dentist theory. It says you must replace your tooth brush every month at least or else you might get even more bacteria onto your teeth. If you fall ill, you must replace your tooth brush even more often and even replace all the tooth brushes lying nearby. Especially in least developed countries – where people need to save every dollar possible – people either don’t know or ignore these theories.

The latest episode of “Topwelt” was about the 10 “strangest” fruits in the world:
>The African horned cucumber is described to taste like a banana-citron-passion-fruit-mix and when stored in a dark, dry, cool place can last as long as a potato. They grow in Central Africa, Angola, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mozambique, Tanzania, Malawi, Congo, Cameroon, Chad and some countries that are not as poor as these.
>The sugar-apple grows in Haiti, Sudan, Togo, Tanzania, Uganda, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Nepal and some more fortunate countries. It is described as tasting very sweet and intense.

The informative German TV-show “360°-GEO Reportage” says that 25 years ago in the North of Cambodia people waited in vain for their government to give them a train. Eventually they decided to stop being passive and out of waste – old bamboo, old motors, metal from discharged tanks – they built their own train and even parts of its railroad. Then some of them came together to make a plan when who would drive the train to which location. As this is all very improvised, this train of course is very cheap, meaning that even poor school-children and farmers can use it. Alas the official train company of Cambodia never was going to accept that and now they are especially confident that the court will finally give in and allow them to remove this makeshift-train as long as they give these farmers some recompensation money – although of course the latter would need a proper train more than money even.
Oh! And it should be added that these farmers even risked their lives while building the railroad as this area is full of land mines.

This week was the anniversary of the murder of Cambodian regime critic Kem Lev. As this murder presumably was motivated and as according to a conspiracy theory they intentionally let the murderer get away with it there were demonstrations this week in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh demanding another examination of the case.
