Chocolate chip cookies. Candy. Cake and ice cream. If you’re not drooling yet, you must not have a sweet tooth.
The US seems to be a nation of sweet lovers. Americans consume about 142 pounds of sugar per year, compared with just 8.3 pounds of broccoli! It sounds like many of us aren’t listening to our moms’ advice to eat our vegetables.
Ella doesn’t really have a sweet tooth. But Amy craves sugary foods. Hear them talk about their sweet-eating habits.

Amy |
Amy: Oh man, I should not have had that entire package of cookies. I have such a stomach ache.
Ella: For me, that’s kind of a weird craving. I’m just not very addicted to sweets. It’s never been a big deal for me.
Amy: Really? I wish I could say the same. Sugar is definitely the thing I crave more than anything else. Salty foods, you know, I don’t care about. But I just love sweets. I’m addicted to them.
Ella: What do you think it would take to make you just give them up?
Amy: I don’t know, I mean, if I…You know, I do other things to kinda keep my weight under control, and like…and be pretty healthy. Like I exercise and I try to eat well in other ways. Definitely if it ended up creating obvious help problems, or if I gained a lot of weight or something, I guess I would definitely try to give it up. But it would be really hard for me.
Ella: In my field of work we see all kinds of problems linked to sugar.
Amy: I know, I know it can cause so many problems. And Americans especially eat so much sugar. You know, we just love our pie, and…
Ella: Pop.
Amy: Yeah, our pop. I don’t drink pop, so that’s one thing that I have going for me. But like, cookies, chocolate, ice cream. Oh gosh, I love it all.

Discussion
Amy ate too many cookies, and now she has a stomach ache. Ella says she doesn’t understand why some people crave sweets so much. She doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth.
Amy loves sweets and doesn’t want to give them up, but she tries to be healthy in other ways. She says that if sweets started to cause health problems for her or if she gained a lot of weight, she would have to stop eating them. But it wouldn’t be easy.
Do you love sweets? What foods do you crave?
