Some people only like to listen to happy music. But for others, there is just something satisfying about listening to music that’s a little bit sad. In a way, sad music can even make you feel good. It can make you feel less alone, or it can be an outlet for your feelings.
Bright Eyes’ music is sad, but you feel good when you listen to it. Maybe that’s because the lyrics are so powerful. Conor Oberst, the brains behind Bright Eyes, has even been compared to one of the greatest songwriters of all time, Bob Dylan. Find out if Jeff and Jason agree with that comparison.

Jeff: Hey Jason, does sad music make you happy?
Jason: Sometimes, yeah. If it’s the right…you know, Bright Eyes would actually be one thing that makes me feel good when I listen to it, even though most of his songs are pretty blue.
Jeff: Yeah, that’s kind of one shining example. He’s kind of known as a moody artist.
Jason: Yeah. I mean, have you heard his newest album, People’s Key?
Jeff: Just one or two songs. Not more than that.
Jason: It’s a little poppier, a little more upbeat. But there’s something about his voice that’s just kinda emo and sad in and of itself, even if he’s playing rockin’ music, which he is on this album.
Jeff: He’s got some pretty great lyrics, a lot of them are pretty intense. I know a lot of people, when the band was first becoming popular, were comparing him to Bob Dylan.
Jason: Right, they were saying Conor Oberst was the Bob Dylan of our generation. Just because of the poetry of the lyrics, you know?
Jeff: Yeah. Exactly.

Discussion
Jason likes Bright Eyes even though the music is sad. It makes him feel good to listen to the songs despite the moody voice of the singer, Conor Oberst.
Bright Eyes’ latest album is a little more upbeat than the previous albums. But it still sounds a little blue, mostly because of the singer’s emo voice.
Jeff says that Conor Oberst has been compared to Bob Dylan because of his poetic lyrics. Oberst has even been called the Bob Dylan of our time.
Do you ever like listening to sad music? What other artists have powerful lyrics?
Jason recently went to a Bright Eyes concert. Read about it and see pictures on his blog.
