Watching TV is supposed to be a fun, relaxing activity. But some people think television is bad for us. If we watch too much and get hooked on it, it can turn us into “couch potatoes”—people who do nothing but sit around on the couch all day staring at the television.
When a fish gets caught on a fisherman’s hook, it’s stuck. It can’t move. The fisherman reels it in, pulling the helpless fish closer and closer to him.
A person who gets hooked on something is in a similar position. He is helpless and stuck. For instance, someone who gets hooked on cigarettes can’t quit smoking, even though he might want to. He is stuck smoking cigarettes.
Tom Hanks says he got hooked on watching the American reality show American Idol. He and his wife can’t stop watching it! He even called into the show to vote for his favorite contestant, because he was so hooked on her. But Hanks isn’t the only one who’s ever gotten hooked on a TV show or movie star. In fact, there are plenty of people who are hooked on Hanks.
